What is past perfect tense with example?


Tenses are major part of English Grammar. If you are perfect in English Grammar, you can speak and write confidently in English which is an universal language of communication.

The past perfect tense is quite easy to understand. This tense talks about ‘past in the past’.

The past perfect tense is used to talk about actions that were completed before sometime in the past or before another action happened. It talks about time up to a certain point in the past.

This tense also shows the order of two past events. The earlier action and the past simple show the later action. It doesn’t matter which event is mentioned first- the tense makes it clear which one happened first.

For Example,

1. Jack was very tired because he had studied full night.

2. Sam went out when his boss had arrived in the office.

 Past Perfect tense Formula

Subject +had + past participle of the verb(V3)+ object

Observe the following Past Perfect Tense Examples

1. Sam had closed the window before the storm arrived

2. I had taken his book but not yours.

3. Whether changed but the team had planned its next move.

4. They had called the police .

5. Jack had completed his cleaning work.

Negative version / Formula of the Past Perfect Tense.

Subject + had +not + V3 (past participle of the verb)+object

1. Sam had closed the window before the storm arrived.

Negative: Sam had not /hadn’t closed the window before the storm arrived.

2. I had taken his book but not yours.

Negative: I had not /hadn’t taken his book but not yours.

3. Whether changed but the team had planned its next move.

Negative: Whether changed but the team had not/ hadn’t planned its next move.

4. They had called the ambulance .

Negative: They had not /hadn’t called the ambulance .

5. Jack had completed his home work.

Negative: Jack had not /hadn’t completed his home  work.

 

 

Interrogative version

Had + subject+ past participle of the verb(V3)+ object?

 

1. Sam had closed the window before the storm arrived.

Interrogative: Had Sam closed the window before the strom arrived?

2. I had borrowed his suit for marriage.

Interrogative: Had I borrowed his suit for marriage?

3. The team had planned its next move.

Interrogative: Had the team planned its next move?

4. They had called the police.

Interrogative: Had they called the police?

5. Jack had completed his first round.

Interrogative: Had Jack completed his first round?

Negative interrogative version

Had +not+ subject+ past participle of the verb(V3)+ object?

 

1. Sam had closed the window before the storm arrived.

Interrogative: Had not/hadn’t Sam closed the window before the storm arrived?

2. Rishita  had taken her jewelry.

Interrogative: Had not /hadn’t Rishita  taken her jewelry?
