An
adverb is a word that modifies or describes a verb, it tells something more
about a verb, tells how the action is done.
For example,
He shouted loudly.
In the above sentence loudly is an
adverb, it describes “How he shouted” that means it describes the verb
‘shouted.’
Let’s see some more sentences,
underlined word is an adverb.
1. Radha sings sweetly.
2. Sam draws beautifully.
3. Raj writes slowly.
4. Harry works cleverly.
5. Jane hits hard.
Ask the question to the verb,
beginning with ‘How’ to the each of the above sentence then we can get the
answer that is adverb.
In the sentence 1 how does Radha
sing...sweetly.
Sentence 2 How does Sam draw?...beautifully.
Sentence 3 how does Raj write?..slowly.
Sentence 4 How does Harry work?...cleverly.
Sentence 5 How does Jane hit?...hard.
So words like sweetly, beautifully, slowly,
cleverly, hard are called ADVERBS
An
adverb not only answers the question how, but also answers when? , Why? , How
much? , How long?, How often?, Where?
Now
observe the following sentences,

The play will begin now. (When will the play begin?)
2.
The sky is up above. (Where is the sky?)
3.
The cup is nearly full. (How much full the cup is?)
4.
My son phones me daily. (How often does your son phone you?)
5.
Rita drank enough water. (How much water did Rita drink?)
Many
adverbs are formed by adjectives by adding ‘ly’, sometimes with a slight
change; such as,
Kind-kindly,
swift – swiftly; clever- cleverly, nice – nicely; heavy- heavily; happy –
happily; true – truly; noble- nobly
But
there are some common adverbs that do not end in ‘ly’, such as again, very,
just, never, often, soon, today, well, also, too.
There are few different kinds of adverbs. They are as following.

Adverbs of Place.

Adverbs of Time
4.
Adverbs of Degree
5.
Interrogative Adverbs

see one by one in detail;
1. Adverbs of Manner
These
adverbs show the manner in which some action is done, are called Adverbs of Manner.
For
example;
1.
He writes badly.
2.
This story is well written.
3.
He loved her truly.
4.
We were received kindly.
5.
You should not do so.
The
words in the bold letter in the above sentences are Adverbs of Manners
Adverbs of manner answer
the question ‘HOW?’
2. Adverbs of Place.
These
adverbs show the where some action is done, are called Adverbs of Place.
For
example;
1.
The train stops here.
2.
Let’s go out.
3.
The watchman is standing outside.
4.
Bring your notebook here.
5.
The kite flies high in the sky.
The
words in the bold letter in the above sentences are Adverbs of Place.
3. Adverbs of Time
These
adverbs show us when things happen in which these are called Adverbs of Time.
For
example;
1.
This magazine is published monthly.
2.
I saw Samuel today.
3.
I am seldom late.
4.
I saw the play last year.
5.
I should leave now.
The
words in the bold letter in the above sentences are Adverbs of Time. The word that describe when, for how long, or how
often a certain action happened.
4. Adverbs of Degree
These
adverbs used with adjectives to add something to their meaning, are called Adverbs of Degree. The word like very,
neatly, quite, rather etc are Adverbs of
Degree
For
example;
1.
The grapes are almost sour.
2.
He is somewhat lazy.
3.
He is very kind.
4.
He is probably right.
5.
The string is too long.
The
words in the bold letter in the above sentences are Adverbs of Degree. And the word followed by the bold letters that
are sour, lazy, kind, right, long {sentences 1 to 5}are adjectives.
5. Interrogative Adverbs
The
words when, where, how, why are adverbs, which are used in asking questions.
They are called Interrogative Adverbs.
For
example;
1. When did he come?
2. Why are you late?
3. How much money you want?
4. Where is my watch?
5. How many prizes have you got?
The
