Common noun:  Common noun refers to the name of person, animal, thing or any place that are generic. Means the name used generally. Common nouns are used commonly. They don't belong to any one particular person, animal, thing or place. They are common to different categories.  They are not capitalized unless they come to the starting of the sentence.

Common noun can be concrete noun, abstract noun, or collective noun.

All nouns can be classified as either common noun or proper noun. All nouns name something but Proper noun name particularly.  And common noun is not like that.

Common nouns are all over the place, which you can observe around you. You use them all the time but you are unconscious about it. You can find it wherever you go.

For example,

 If you are in the classroom, you can find the nouns like duster, table, chalk, eraser, teacher, fan, blackboard etc.

What is a proper noun?

When the common noun is the first word of the sentence then the first letter will be capital. In such case it is a little bit difficult to decide whether it is a common noun or proper noun. At that time the reader has to ask the question that whether the noun is referred for the particular person or not.

For example;

1Arnav went to school.

2. He is my friend Arnav.

In the sentence 1 Arnav is a proper noun and school is a common noun.

And in sentence 2 also Arnav is a proper noun so its first letter is capital.

3. Birds fly in the sky.

In the sentence 3 the word ‘birds’ is a common noun but as it is a first word of sentence the its capitalized..
