Indian-Origin Leader's Attempt to Succeed Rishi Sunak as Conservative Leader
Priti Patel Aims to Unite Conservatives Post-Election Defeat |
Leadership
nomination will shut mid-afternoon on Monday. Conservative Members of Parliament
will subsequently contracted the applicants by the end of September just in time
for the party’s annual conference. They will narrow it down to two candidates,
who will then be voted on by party members.
London: Former
Home Secretary Priti Patel has entered the race to lead the conservative Party,
becoming the fifth candidate in the contest. This comes after the party suffered
its worst election defeat and was ousted from government after 14 years, during
which it had five different prime ministers.
Patel's
campaign emphasizes the need for unity within the party. “It's time to
prioritize getting along over holding grudges, putting our country before our
political party, and thinking about the consequences of our actions rather than
our own interests." she stated.
She joins Mel Stride, James Cleverly, tom
Tugendhat and Robert Jenrick (ex-Immigration Minister) in a race that will
continue until November2nd.
Currently,
Patel is in fifth place according to Uk bookmakers, with odds of 10/1. The
person most likely to win is Kemi Badenoch , who used to be the Business
Secretary, she hasn’t joined the race yet.
