1. Where was
Kalpana Chawla born? Why is she called an Indian- American?
Answer: kalpana Chawla was born at Karnal, in
Haryana. She was born in India, but married an American and became a
naturalized citizen. So she is called an Indian-American.
2. When and
why did she go to the U.S.? Who did she marry?
Answer:
kalpana went to the U.S. for master degree in aeronautical engineering after completing
her bachelor degree. There she married the flight instructor Jean- Pierre
Harrison.
3. How did
she become an astronaut? What gave her the idea that she could be an astronaut?
Answer: She
completed her bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering, and then she went
to the U.S. for master’s degree. She earned her Ph.D in aerospace engineering. She
applied NASA‘s space shuttle program and got hired as a research scientist as
NASA. Then she was selected for training as an astronaut in 1994.
4. What
abilities must an astronaut have, according to the journalist?
Answer: Acccording
to journalist , an astronaut needs to know a lot about everything, from biology
to astrophysics to aeronautical engineering. In this age of super-
specialization, astronaut should know encyclopedic knowledge to be an
astronaut.
5. Describe
Kalpana Chawla’s first mission in space.
Answer:
Kalpana’s first mission in the space shuttle, Columbia, was 15 days, 16 hours
and 34 minutes long. During this time she went around the earth 252 times. This
travelling was 0.45 million kilometers. The crew included Japanese and a Ukrainian
astronaut. They performed many experiments such as pollinating plants to
observe food growth in space and tests for making stronger metals and faster
computer chips.
6. What does
Kalpana Chawla say about pursuing a dream? Do you agree with her that success
is possible?
Answer:
kalpana Chawla says that, “The path from dreams to success does exist. May you
have the vision ti find it, the courage to get onto it……” yes I agree with what
she said. If we dare to dream we must have the courage and determination to face
any kind of obstacle in your path.
